U.S. Congressman. He was president of the New York Board of Aldermen in 1866, director of the New York & Long Island Bridge Company, a member of the board of water commissioners of Brooklyn, (1871-72) and president of the Bushwick Railroad Company, (1868-78). In 1875, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1883. After leaving Congress, he conducted real estate business until his death at age 85.
