Samuel immigrated to the US in 1847. He was baptized in the LDS church in 1854. He married Ellen Sutton on 26 Apr 1858 in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is believed that Ellen Sutton was previously married to Charles McKetchnie who became disenchanted with the church and left Ellen and a young daughter. Charles tried to kidnap their daughter probably to take with him to California. This daughter died when she was about 10.

Ellen's brother Peter introduced her to Samuel. The young men were both working on the Salt Lake Temple.

He later married Ellenor Coolidge Chase on 3 May 1883.
