At the age of 53, George enlisted and fought for the Confederacy as a Private with the 20th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry, Company B, mustering out in 1865.
He died at his homestead on the Little South Fork and was buried in the family cemetery alongside his wife Franky.
The Barrier family cemetery is located south west, of Route 92 south of Monticello, on Burfield Hollow Road.
