Mortimer Sullivan was born to Timothy and Abigail (Murphy) on August 7, 1866 in Castletown District, County Cork, Ireland.

He came to America in 1883 despite most of his family reamining in Ireland.

Mortimer married Mary Ann Thompson and together they had Mabel (1893) and Alma (1896). They lived on Ridgewood Avenue from 1892 until June 22, 1913 when he drowned in the EJ&E freight yards in Joliet. It was but his second night on the job after laboring as a meat-cutter and butcher for many years.

Mortimer is buried alongside Mary Ann in the Thompson plot of his in-laws in Mt. Olivet (Joliet).
