CALEDONIA, Minn. Eugene T. Bissen, 83, of Caledonia passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at Caledonia Care and Rehab in Caledonia.
He was born Sept. 19, 1927, in La Crosse, Wis., to Nicholas and Sophia (Graf) Bissen. He served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Navy. Gene married Doris Blank May 22, 1948, at St. Peters Catholic Church, Hokah. He went into business with Roger Koel and owned and operated Caledonia Oil for a number of years. After selling the business he started wood working and was active doing wood projects until his health required him to stop recently. He enjoyed hunting, he was a member of Loveless Eikens American Legion Post 191 in Caledonia, and was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church, Caledonia.
He is survived by his wife, Doris of Caledonia; a daughter, Jeanette (Anthony) Potter of Tucsan, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Gabriel and Timothy Potter and Michael and Susanna Bissen; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Lillian) Bissen of Caledonia; a sister, Mary Rita VonArx of Houston, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Bernetta Bissen of Hokah and Florence Bissen of La Crosse.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas; three brothers, Raymond, Joseph, and Warren; and a sister, Catherine.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at St. Marys Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will offciate and burial with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Holy Family Hall, next to St.Marys Church, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. A luncheon will follow the service Saturday at St. Marys school auditorium.
