Mr. Gilkerson was born in the North River area of Rockingham County on June 28, 1899. He was the son of the late William A.R. Gilkerson and Blanche Glover Gilkerson.
Mrs. Gilkerson operated the Gilkerson Grocery Store in Mount Crawford from 1925 until 1947. Then he became a salesman for S.C. Good Co. for 21 years. After retiring in 1968, he worked part –time for the Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation Department until 1995. Mr. Gilkerson was an avid baseball fan and a strong supporter of the Valley League for many years.
His wife, Mary Virginia Gilkerson, preceded him in death in 1987.
He is survived by one son, Cecil F. Gilkerson and daughter-in-law, Gay W. Gilkerson of 507 Paul Street, Harrisonburg, Va.; four granddaughters, Pamela Setzer of Salisbury, N.C., Lynn Turner of Harrisonburg, VA., Julie King of Waynesboro, Va., and Sharon Johnson of Winchester, Mass.; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister Carolyn Doom of Staunton, Va.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Tuesday morning, Oct. 1, 1996, from the Harrisonburg Baptist Church with Dr. Tom Reynolds and Rev. T.W. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Crawford Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 Monday evening at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home and may call at the home of Cecil Gilkerson, 507 Paul Street, at any time.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Building Fund of the Harrisonburg Baptist Church, South Main and Liberty Streets, Harrisonburg, VA.
