Mary Mellen Freeland's oldest sibling was John Augustus Freeland, Sr. (1809 to 1860), my great, great grandfather who married Eliza C. Bryan in Manhattan in 1844 at St. Paul's Chapel as her first husband.
Mary Mellen Freeland, born about 1828/1829 married Peter Bogardus about 1849, a successful businessman in Hudson, New York who was treasurer of Columbia County when he died in 1868. I believe that they were third cousins. They had four children that I know of: Leonard Freeland Bogardus, Emma, Little Mary, and Grace Freeland Bogardus.
I believe that I found a marriage record for the proper Emma Bogardus but I have to locate the source material. I think that the information was on the New York State Census of 1875 for Columbia County, New York.
Little Mary Bogardus was married to Charles E. Bostwick by the time the U. S. Census of 1880 was taken. Mary Mellen (Freeland) Bogardus, Little Mary, her husband Charles E. Bostwick, and eleven year old Grace Freeland Bogardus were boarding at a home in Hudson in 1880.
Grace Freeland Bogardus, who was born September 12, 1868 a few months after her father died, eventually married Major Charles Stott of Stottville at Christ Episcopal Church in Hudson, New York on November 26, 1890. She was given in marriage by her brother Leonard Freeland Bogardus. Grace and Charles had two daughters.
Mary, the widow of Peter Bogardus, died in Manhattan in 1887 at the home of her married son Leonard Freeland Bogardus who was a grocer in the city at that time.
