US Senator, Journalist. He was born in Suffolk, Nasemond County, Virginia. He studied medicine and practiced medicine and pharmacy throughout his life. He founded newspapers in Memphis, Tennessee, and Little Rock, Arkansas. He served in the military in the Mexican-American War, was taken prisoner but escaped. After the war, he was elected as a United States Senator to fill an unexpired term. He resigned from the Senate before the end of his term and served as United States Minister to Nicaragua. After returning to Arkansas he helped recruit troops for the Confederate army and served as an officer early in the war but left due to declining health. He was honorably discharged under Special Orders #98, May 25th 1862. He died before the war's end in Harris County, Texas. A marker in his memory is in Mount Holly Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas, erected in 1992 in the family plot, but no graves are marked. Some records indicate his birth date as September 21, 1808, some as August 8, 1811.
