Lydia Davenport was born in Palmyra, Halifax County, the eldest of 8 known surviving children (3 boys/5 girls) born to farmer and carpenter, John R. Davenport and his wife, Ella O. Edmunds. The Davenport family removed to Tarboro aft 1880. She married James Battle Bryant on January 15, 1885 and was mother to 14 known children. She was widowed in 1934, and died in 1953 at age 83.
