WAYLAND - Sarah Ann Hubbard (Church) Popko, 78, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at her home from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

She was the wife of Peter Crone Popko for 54 years. She married him on 30 Aug 1952 at the Plymouth Congregational Church in Seattle, WA.

Born in Mount Vernon, Wash., the daughter of the late Herbert Safford and Augusta Hubbard Burwell Church, she grew up in Seattle, attended Broadway High School, and completed her studies at Walnut Hill School in Natick. She graduated from Colby Junior College (now Colby- Sawyer College) in 1949, after which she worked for the YWCA in Boston.

For more than 25 years, she worked side by side with her husband as vice president of administration for Foamtech Corp. in Fitchburg, a company they had founded. They were residents of Wayland for more than 51 years.

As a girl, she spent summers on Bainbridge Island in Seattle with her cousins, Ellen Morford Fisher and Sarah Morford Tousley. Later, she spent vacations on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, where she continued to enjoy summers with her husband, children, grandchildren and friends. She spent many summers gardening, attending all the local fairs and boating on the lake.

An avid gardener and bridge player, she loved reading and needlepoint and traveling with her husband. She was an active alumna for Walnut Hill School and Colby-Sawyer College, and was a member of the Boston City Women's Club, Wayland Garden Club and Alton, N.H., Garden Club, and Trinitarian Congregational Church in Wayland.

Besides her husband, she leaves her children, Susan Ann Popko Stenquist and her husband, Brad W., of Wayland, Peter Frank Popko of Worcester and Katharine Gail Popko Neidorf and her husband, Alan, of Yorktown Heights, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Lindsay Marie Stenquist of Framingham and Daniel and Miles Neidorf of Yorktown Heights; many cousins and dear friends; and her stepsisters, Karen Pinkham of Ashland, Ore., and Ann Vogel of Bent, Ore.

She was the sister of the late Thomas Teasdale Church and stepdaughter of the late Effie Poor Church.

A memorial service was held Monday, June 12, at the Trinitarian Congregational Church of Wayland.

Memorial donations may be made to Parmenter Community Health, Wayside Hospice, 266 Cochituate Road, Wayland MA 01778.

She leaves her children Susan P. Stenquist and her husband Brad W. Stenquist of Wayland, MA; Peter F. Popko of Worcester, MA and Katharine P. Neidorf and her husband Alan Neidorf of Yorktown Heights, NY; her grandchildren, Lindsay M. Stenquist of Framingham, MA; Daniel Neidorf and Miles Neidorf of Yorktown Heights, NY. A memorial service will be held Monday, June 12, at 3:00 PM, at the Trinitarian Congregational Church, 53 Cochituate Road, Wayland, MA 01778. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wayside Hospice, 266 Cochituate Road, Wayland, MA 01778.
