US Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1828. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1833-34, 1844-51) and delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1852. In 1853, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress, serving until 1855. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law in Washington, D.C., until his death at age 76.
