Brother of Roy Acuff ("The King of Country Music").


Claude Roger Acuff Sr., 61, Superintendent of Henry Horton State Park, Chapel Hill, died Monday afternoon, August 23, 1971 in Taylor Hospital, Lewisburg, after a heart attack.

Acuff was born in Maynardville, Tenn.. He attended Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Ky. He was a son of the late Neill and Ida Carr Acuff.

Before coming to Henry Horton, Acuff was superintendent of several other state parks including Pickett State Park at Jamestown and Dunbar Cave at Clarksville.

He was a member of the Lewisburg Elks Club. He was a veteran of World War II, and was a member of Arlington Baptist Church in Knoxville.

Survived by widow, Mrs. Gladys Aston Acuff, Chapel Hill; a daughter, Mrs. David (Shirley) Bradley, Melbourne, Fla.; a son, Claude Roger Acuff, Jr., Lebanon, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Hartsell D. Phillips,, Clarksville, Mrs. Robert L. Allen, Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, Briscoe Acuff, Clarksville and Roy C. Acuff, Nashville and five grandchildren.

Remains are at the Lawrence Funeral Home where services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock by Rev. Clint Churchwell. Pallbearers: Honorary - Governor Winfield Dunn, Former Governor of Tennessee Buford Ellington, Commissioner of Conservation, William L. Jenkins, Director of State Parks, W. T. Boswell, Former Commissioners of Conservation, E. Boyd Garrett and Brents McBride, James Reece, J. T. Edwards, Jr. and Superintendents of all State Parks.

Active Pallbearers: Robert Stammer, Charles A. Leake, Floyd Bowers, J. P. Huddleston, Beecher Kirby, Lonnie Wilson, Glenn White, Lt. Fenton W. Page.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:30 to 8:30 at the funeral home. Interment: Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville, Tenn.
