Rachel received her teaching degree from Manchester College and later graduated from St. Francis with a master's degree in education. Rachel was a teacher for over 30 years. She taught in Orland, IN and Auburn IN at the Dekalb County Central United School District where she was a pioneer in special education. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the United Methodist Church and its choir. Rachel was also a Sunday school teacher and belonged to the United Methodist Women. She loved to read, do crossword puzzles, play cards and watch Detroit Tiger baseball and hockey.
Rachel married the late Orval Bair on May 17, 1935. They were married for 61 years.
She is survived by her daughters, Norma (Jerry) Hampton of Eaton Rapids, Natalie (Rev. C. Jarrell) Tyson of Mountain Home, AR; grandchildren, Karla Hampton Anderson of Marshall,MI; Bret Gorny of Tuttle, OK; Gregory Hampton of Oswego,IL; Sean Kersey of Grand Ledge, MI; Melissa Gorny VanVleet of Fargo, ND; Scott Kersey of Cleveland Heights, OH; 17 great grandchildren. Rachel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orval Bair; son, Burdette Bair; sisters, Floiad Collins Carlisle, Lois Carlisle, Genelle Collins; brothers Russell Collins, Cleveland "Eddie" Colllins, Albertus Collins.
Graveside services will be held April 27, 2011 with Rev. C. Jarrell Tyson officiating. A memorial services will be held in Auburn, IN.
