Unabomber Murder Victim. Gilbert Brent Murray, a 47 years old graduated with a BS in Forestry from the University of California, Berkeley, a husband and father. He spent more than 16 years with Collins Pine Company in Chester, California, he and his wife, Connie decided to move to Sacramento, where he became California Forestry Association vice president of private land resources. The major move and change in career was based on a desire to benefit their family. His family orientation and resulting personal sensitivity toward others, which helped him in his role as mediator and facilitator in the position of CFA president, to which he was promoted in April, 1994. The promotion came after the former President had retired, which is who the package was addressed to that killed Gilbert. A soft spoken man who enjoyed practical jokes, he was raised in Southern California and survived a tour in Vietnam. Gilbert was an excellent skier who consistently placed among the top competitors in an annual race among Northern California foresters. The package that exploded in Gilbert's downtown office that day, less than one week after the bombing of Oklahoma City's federal building, the explosion so powerful that it blew out windows and doors. Theodore John Kaczynski, who had been living in a tiny cabin near Lincoln, Mont. for nearly 25 years, was arrested on April 3, 1996. Two years later he would be sentenced to life in prison. It is thought that he made the deal to avoid the death penalty. He received four life sentences plus another 30 years for his actions.
