Burial stone says b. 1840, but that's incorrect; 1844 can be considered official, since Thomas himself wrote that he was born April 29, 1844, Hart Co., KY (military pension application papers, in this case signed/dated 28 Nov 1905). His first three appearances on the US censuses in KY (1850/1860/1870, ages 5, 16 and 26 respectively) support his affidavit.
According to same military pension papers (affiant same date as above), his first wife was a ("Mrs. McKinny" in papers, "Margaret" on 1870 census, Daviess Co KY), married April 16, 1864 at Leitchfield, Grayson Co KY. By checking a Daviess Co land map representing the mid 1870's with landowner names and comparing to 1870 census, I found it was clear that many of his census "neighbors" had land in the Sorgho and Pettit area. The summer of 1875 was a bad year for cholera deaths in the "west of Owensboro" as an August? 1875 Owensboro Examiner newspaper stated, and Thomas' 2nd marriage was to Sarah Jane Parson (68766500) on 6 Jan 1876. So, I presume that Mrs. Margaret McKinn(e)y Crowe died in the summer of 1875, possibly along with her son James McKinn(e)y (Crowe), age 8 in same 1870 census.
His parental connection to Amanda R. Crowe Baker (21899430) is adoptive (maiden name unknown). Connection to his biological parents still elusive at this point. His adoptive father Patrick Crowe, Amanda's first husband, might possibly be buried at that same Leitchfield KY cemetery in an unmarked grave, but then it may be anywhere else in (likely) Grayson Co KY.
