British Olympic Medalist. She won the Silver Medal in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City for running the 400 meters and two gold medals at the 1969 European Championships in Athletics in Athens setting a world record of 3 minutes 30.8 seconds in the 4x400m. Thinking that she had a stomach virus, she continued to run races as her health declined rapidly in months. A promising career was cut short in 1970 when she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer that would claim her life just after her 22nd birthday. She had a twin sister, Irene. In her memory an avenue bearing her name in Munich, Germany leads to the Olympic Stadium. A biography entitled simply "Lillian" was published by her fiancé, David Emery, in 1971.
