Raised by her Mother's sister, Dona Belle Cheairs (and her husband Charles W Brooks), as her own from about the age of 3 years.

All of her school records, college diploma, marriage license and even her obituary use Brooks as her last name. Charles W attempted to adopt her, but JC Tabb refused.

The US Census in 1930 and 1940 lists "Jannievee"Tabb as a niece living with Charles W and Dona Belle Brooks but not legally adopted.

Jannie married Carroll Raybourne Ball (1925- ), son of Marvin Hugh Ball (1895-1979) and Elizabeth Hillman (1897-1982) and had two sons, James Brooks (1950- ) and Peter Stephen ( - ).
