US Congressman, US Senator. A 1908 graduate of the University of Virginia law school, he built a successful law career in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He served in the Virginia State Senate from 1916 to 1922, and during World War I served in the United States Army as a Major in the Adjutant General's office in Washington, DC. He was elected as a Democrat to represent Virginia's 7th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1933 to 1946. He was then elected as a Democratic Senator from Virginia to the United States Senate, filling the vacancy caused when Senator Carter Glass died in office. He served in the Senate from 1946 until he resigned in 1966. He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1907. He was the father of television evangelist Pat Robertson.
