U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute, in 1857; taught school in Rogersville, Tennessee and during the Civil served as Colonel in command of the 63rd Tennessee Regiment, confederate Army. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and began a legal practice in Goodson, Virginia in 1866. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, (1871-73) and served in the Virginia State Senate, (1877-79). In 1881, he was elected as a Readjuster Democrat to the Forty-seventh Congress, serving until 1883. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law and served in the Virginia House of Delegates, in 1888. He died from complications of a stroke at age 68.
