U.S. Senator. He taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate (1863-75) and a member of the commission to suggest amendments to the Constitution of Pennsylvania in 1874. in 1875, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1881. After his term he resumed the practice of law and was president of the Beech Creek Railroad, until his death at age 68.
