U.S. Senator. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, in 1872, he served as a Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Regiment, Infantry, until he resigned from the Army, in 1877. Moving to Trenton, New Jersey, he engaged in the manufacture of wire products. He was a member of the Trenton School Board, (1884-92), Mayor of Trenton, (1899-1902), a member of the New Jersey State board of education, (1901-02) and New Jersey State Treasurer, (1902-07). In 1907, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1913. After leaving the Senate, he resumed his former business pursuits until his death at age 61.
