US Senator, Publisher. He Graduated from Bethany College West Virginia, in 1868, taught school, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1871 and practiced law in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He president of the Pittsburgh Central Board of Education, (1881-84), engaged in the newspaper business, then became publisher of the Pittsburgh Gazette-Times and Pittsburgh Chronicle-Telegraph, in 1900. In 1909, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1917. He declined to be a candidate for reelection and retired from public life, until his death at age 70.
