US Congressman, Entrepreneur. He was a United States Representative from the State of Ohio. He was born one of seven children as William Dell Lindsley to Dr. Urial Shove Lindsley (1777-1838), and his wife Polly Davenport Smith Lindsley (1785-1820), in New Haven, Connecticut, on December 25, 1812. He was educated locally and attended the local common public schools. He then moved to Buffalo, New York, in 1832, and then he relocated to Erie County, Ohio, before settling near Sandusky, Ohio, shortly thereafter. He then took up agricultural pursuits including farming and then entered the military and served with the rank of Captain in the Ohio Militia from 1840 to 1843, and was then promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in 1843. Following his military service, he took an interest in politics. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to succeed the outgoing United States Representative James Madison Gaylord (1811-1874), on March 4, 1853. A Member of the Democratic Party, he then served Ohio's 13th District (Thirty-Third Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1853, to March 3, 1855. He was an unsuccessful Candidate for reelection to represent the Thirty-Fourth Congress in the United States House of Representatives in 1854. Following his term in the United States Congress, he was succeeded in office by the incoming United States Representative John Sherman (1823-1900), on March 4, 1855. After leaving the United States Congress, he resumed his agricultural pursuits including farming until his death. He passed away unexpectedly from pneumonia at his residence in Perkins Township in Erie County, Ohio, on March 11, 1890, at the age of 77. Following his death, his funeral service was officiated by the Reverend J.F. Brant at the local Trinity M.E. Church in Sandusky, Ohio, with many people coming to pay their respects to the late United States Representative. Following the funeral service, his casket was placed in a receiving vault and then he was buried in the family plot in Oakland Cemetery in Sandusky, Ohio, shortly thereafter. On his passing, he was remembered as one of Erie County, Ohio's most esteemed and respected citizens, as a "kind-hearted man, fond of his friends and genial to all, a man of public spirit who took a personal interest in public affairs, honest in his business relations, charitable in judging of others, and who was devoted to his family, he has left behind a heritage better that money-the record of a useful and honourable life." He was married to Minerva Bell Beebe Lindsley (1803-1888), in Huron, Ohio, on October 2, 1837, and the couple had two children together, Solon Dell Lindsley (1838-1890), and Alice L. Lindsley (1845-1893). His wife Minerva predeceased him in death by two years, passing away in Sandusky, Ohio, on April 10, 1888, and she was buried in the family plot in Oakland Cemetery in Sandusky, Ohio.
