Jennie Berends, nee noble, the daughter of Johnston and Laura Shattuck Noble was born at Ava, Missouri February 18, 1894. She came to Osceola County as a small child and was educated in schools near her childhood home.
She was united in marriage to Chris Berends at Spirit Lake, Iowa, March 22, 1917. To this union were born four children. The couple farmed near May City until Chris died in 1950. Jennie lived in Hartley since 1952. She always kept busy, working for some time at the Hartley Creamery and always had time to lend a hand for her friends. She stayed with and took care of many people who were shut-ins, whether for a short time or for longer periods. She suffered a stroke in April 1973 which left her paralyzed and unable to speak although her mind remained keen and her smile radiant. She became a resident of the Mann Memorial Wing in May 1973.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church where she was active in WSCS, Circle and prayer groups until her illness.
She passed away at the Mann Wing March 12, 1974, at the age of 80. Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, a brother Roy and an infant sister.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Mrs. John (Pearl) Frerichs of Spencer, Mrs. Lloyd (Irma) Gonnerman of Hartley, two sons, Archie of Everly and Leslie of Elizabeth, Colorado, eleven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, one brother, Ray Noble of Ocheyedan, Iowa, other relatives and her many friends.
