"Governor Alexandre Mouton, former president of the Louisiana Secession Convention, died at Ile Copal in 1885, a venerable and respected elder statesman. His daughter Mathilde, the wife of Confederate General Frank Gardner, was widowed shortly after the war. Almost all her children died at an early age. When her last surviving son, Alfred Frank Gardner, Jr., died, she had his tomb cast in broken marble as indicative of her own broken life. Mathilde died about 1906."
