Edward the son of Dionicio J. Ariaz and Helen Ariaz of Chicago IL enlisted in the US Marine Corps on June 1 1967,in Chicago IL. He arrived in Vietnam on February 1, 1968 and was assigned for duty to Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On March 16, during Operation Worth, while continuing the attack west in the vicinity of Hill 502, the Marines of Company C sighted twenty five NVA in uniforms and were engaged by the enemy with automatic weapons, RPG's and 60 mm mortars. During the attack on the enemy force PFC Ariaz was killed in action from the hostile fire.
