Funeral service with Revs. Jeff Miller and Herman Merritt officiating were Friday, Dec. 24, in the Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home Chapel of Memories.
Interment will follow in the Gunsight Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home.
Bud was born on June 13, 1940 in Holliday, to Floyd Bates and Edna Sawyer Bates. He married Cheri Broyles Dec. 2, 1995.
He graduated from Holliday High School in 1958. Bud was a backhoe operator and a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include wife, Cheri Bates of Breckenridge; daughter Maggie Bates of Breckenridge; sons, David Bates and wife, Rene of Iowa Park and Breck Bates of Breckenridge; sister, Julie Alford and husband, Bill of Wichita Falls; Grandchildren, Brady, Bryce, and Breanna Bates, Laken Smith and Creed Wells.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a sister. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Youth or the Bates Family Fund at Citizens National Bank of Breckenridge.
