Mr. Giuseppe "Joseph" Barbaritano, 70, passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, with all of his loving family by his side after a courageous battle with Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma.

He was born in Utica, January 1, 1941, a son of the late Paul and Elvira (Picente) Barbaritano. Joseph was educated in local schools attending Brandagee and Mt. Carmel Schools and later T.R. Proctor High School. He received a degree in HVAC at Mohawk Valley Community College. Joe served in the US Army from 1961 to 1963 and later in the Army Reserve for nineteen years.

An employee of Utica Cutlery for a short time, Joe continued his career at Bendix Corp as a machinist for thirty four years, retiring as a supervisor in quality control in 2001. On September 4, 1993, Joe was joined in marriage to the former Linda Pontero. They have shared eighteen loving years together.

In earlier years Joe was an avid hunter, and more recently he enjoyed astronomy and loved making astronomical charts. He was an accomplished woodworker and everyone has a treasured creation that he made especially for them. Joe also enjoyed spending time with his wife at the casino, especially in Atlantic City. He was truly a loving family man, who kept the Italian cooking traditions alive with his kids so they could continue making "Papa Joe's Specialties".

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Linda; son, Paul Barbaritano; daughters and sons-in-law, Annemarie and John Spina, all of Utica, and Marygrace and Tim Morgan of FL; son and daughter-in-law, Scott Williams and Darlene Vitullo of Ballston Lake; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Joseph Torchia of New Hartford; his loving grandchildren, who were a very big part of his life, David and Erica Vitullo, Jessica Hoage, twins, Julie and Jennifer Hoage, John Spina IV, Sarah Barbaritano, twins, Mollie and Emily Barbaritano, Joshua and Savannah Morgan, and Jordyn, Matthew and Ryan Torchia; his sister, Lucy Hyman; and also many nieces, nephews, and cousins, including two special nephews, John Hyde and Michael Hyman. He was predeceased by a very special niece, Elvira Hyde, and his mother-in-law, with whom he had a special bond, Frances "Katie" Pontero.

His funeral will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. from The Matt Funeral Home and at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in New Hartford. Private interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., corner of Mohawk St., Utica.

The family would like to offer their gratitude to the Doctors, nurses and aides of the sixth floor at St. Luke's Hospital for their compassion and wonderful care shown to Joseph and his family during his illne
