During the football off-season, Shaw played for parts of two years (1945 to 1947) in the National Basketball League with the Cleveland Allmen Transfers, Youngstown Bears and Toledo Jeeps. Shaw's most productive year was in 1950 with the Cardinals, as he recorded 48 receptions for 971 yards and led the league with 12 touchdowns, earning him Pro-Bowl honors that season. Shaw concluded his playing career in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts.
