Devereaux was listed as an enslaved person in the will of Thomas Baker Towson. He later appears in tax records as Devereaux or Devro Towson. In 1870, 35-year-old Devereaux Towson is living with 25-year-old Emma, 18-year-old Sarah, 10-year-old Eliza, 6-year-old Albert, 4-year-old Ida, 2-year-old Lena, and 5-month-old Robert.
