Civil War Union Major General. A 1849 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he served in a number of theatres during the Civil War in various capacities, all with laudable success. He commanded a brigade in the Union's successful 1862 North Carolina expedition, and served on Major General Ambrose Burnside's staff during the 1862 Maryland Campaign. He led the IX Corps in the assaults and subsequent capture of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and fought in the Battles of Knoxville, Petersburg and the fight at Fort Stedman, Virginia. During the last battle he commanded the Army of the Potomac in Major General George Meade's absence. For his services he received a brevet promotion to Major General, US Regular Army in March 1865.
