She is the daughter of Rev. Timothy and Mary Clark Goodwin. Her father was a doctor and a minister in the Methodist Episcopal church. The 1855 New York census indicates she was born in Herkimer county. Two of her sisters, Sarah M. and Lydia were born in Canada, also where her father preached. Her mother, Mary Clark Goodwin, was born in Vermont, and died at Westfield, Chautauqua, New York probably on April 9, 1835.
