On the 1860 Chicago Ward 9, Cook Co., IL census, I found "Com.", H Adams, 40; Amanda Adams, 37; Mary C Adams, 14; Robt Mc A Adams, 12; Cyrus Adams, 11; Jas N Adams, 7; Sarah E Adams, 5; H L Adams, 3; Edwd Adams, 6/12, 3 plus servants. All VA born except for Edward in IL.

They were all VA born except Edward and Minnie, born in IL.

On the 24 Jun 1880 Chicago, Cook Co., IL census, I found Hugh Adams, 65, says "died March 10, 80, Pneumonia," his line has a line all the way through it*; wife Amanda Adams, 55; Board of Trade and son Robt. Adams, 36; dau. in law Ella Adams, 22; g.son Clayburn Adams, 4; Board of Trade and son James Adams, 27; Board of Trade and son Cyrus Adams, 29; dau. in law Emma Adams, 24; clerk and son Lee Adams, 24; clerk and son Edward Adams, 23 and daughter Minnie Adams, 17. Hugh and Amanda were born in Virginia and the rest were born in Illinois. They lived at 118 Pine Street. On the same page was neighbor and "reaper" Wm L McCormick, 42 and his family.

Her husband Hugh died 10 Mar 1880. The 1880 Mortality Schedule says the cause was typhoid from pneumonia. His obit was in the 23 Mar 1880 issue of the Staunton Spectator (see 5-2017 added photo on his site).

ADAMS - Amanda J McCormick Adams fell asleep in Jesus, at Glen Springs, Watkins, N Y, on the 12th day of October, 1891, Amanda Johanna, daughter of Robert and Mary Anna McCormick, of Rockbridge County, Virginia, and widow of the late Hugh Adams, of Chicago, Ill. Mrs. Adams was born at "Walnut Grove," the old McCormick Homestead in Rockbridge county, Virginia, September 17, 1822. Early in life she made a public profession of her faith in Christ, and joined the Presbyterian church near her father's home. She was married to Hugh Adams on the 8th day of May 1845, and they settled at Kerr's Creek, a small town in the same county, where six children were born unto them, viz: Mary, Robert, Cyrus, James, Ella and Leander. In 1857 the family removed to Chicago, where, associated with the late Hon. Cyrus H McCormick, her husband became the active partner in the well known grain firm of McCormick, Adams & Co. 4 Nov 1891 issue of the Staunton Spectator.

Amanda's father, Robert McCormick's Walnut Grove farm is located near Raphine, Rockbridge Co., VA. 8 of the 9 buildings remain today (A History of Rockbridge Co., by Oren F Morton, the WPA survey, multiple online sites, even wikipedia has data on the farm.)

Amanda's brother Leander James McCormick, wrote a McCormick biography called Family Record and Biography in 1896. It includes photos of both Amanda and husband Hugh Adams inside, plus her bio. It says she was born in Rockbridge Co., VA.

See further data on her and her family in Henry Whittemore's The History of the Adams Family, With Biographical Sketches of Distinguished Descendants of the Several American Ancestors....., 1893 publication in NY, p 71-73.
