KAUNAKAKAI, Molokai—Walter Aulani Ragsdale, Jr., a retired Honolulu police lieutenant who played a prominent role in efforts to revitalize his home island of Molokai, died Tuesday in Honolulu. He was 62.

Ragsdale was raised on Molokai, attended Kamehameha Schools, and spent a few years on the Mainland before returning to Hawaii to join the Honolulu Police Department.

His community service began as a police officer. He was active in programs such as the Police Activities League judo program. After he retired in 1982, he returned to Molokai and was chairman of Molokai Planning Commission for five years.

He later was appointed to the Maui Police Commission. Current chairman Gus Fuentes said Ragsdale was a knowledgeable adviser on how commission decisions would affect rank-and-file officers.

He also served as a consultant on security and community issues to Molokai Ranch and was a staunch supporter and friend of Maui Mayor Linda Lingle.

"He was like a big brother to me," Lingle said. "His positive outlook and love for people and the island of Molokai was unquestioned.

"Walter was typical of the people of Molokai, blending the old and new to form a unique Molokai style."

Molokai Ranch chief executive James Mozley said Ragsdale's death "is really a blow for me personally and from a business standpoint.

"He was a real strong team-building force for the ranch," Mozley said. "He encouraged a lot of our younger employees, counseling and directing them. He was a good sounding board for ideas and a trusted and respected friend."

Ragsdale is survived by companion, Carla Brede; sons Todd and Jody; daughters Patrice McCauley and Jeri; stepsons Chuck and Don Wilson; sisters Noelani Dela Cruz and Hiilani Henry; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Borthwick Mortuary in Honolulu. Services will be at 7 p.m. Friends also may call 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 17 at Kalaikamanuhou Church on Molokai. A service will be held at 11 a.m., and burial will be at Kapaakea Cemetery. Aloha attire.
