Served with his brother Richard M. Johnson at the "Battle of the Thames" in the War of 1812 where the Indian Chieftan Tecumseh was killed. He married Elizabeth Flournoy on April 2, 1816. Henry and his nephew, Junius Ward, were among the first to carve plantations out of the rich soil of the Mississippi Delta in Washington County, Mississippi. Henry selected a homesite which he named Chatham on Lake Washington. He owned vast acreage there.
