After serving in the US Army Signal Corps during World War II, he became a special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in sabotage and counter-espionage division. In 1946, he was elected county judge of Tazewell County Illinois. He was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-first Congress in 1949 and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1957. Not a candidate for renomination, he resumed the practice of law and was the regional counsel for General Services Administration, Lansing, Illinois, until he retired in 1974.
