Harry Laurin Hawke was the sixth of seven children born to George Lincoln Hawke (1860-1946) and Julia Cornelius Hawke (1864-1942). He was raised around the Grove City area in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

He married Hazel E. Logan (1891-?).

Harry was a World War I Veteran and was a disabled Volunteer Soldier. He served as a private in the Army in Company K, 320th Infantry, 80th Division. He enlisted in February 1918 and was discharged in December 1918.
