ELIZABETH LEE CHAMPIE

Lizzie was born on 31 October 1865 in Illinois, the daughter of Thomas and Agnes Bridget Feeley Lee. In 1886, the 20 year old bride of Charles Edward Champie, II, whom she had married on November 16, 1882 in Ft. McKavitt, Texas, came with her family to Arizona and they settled on the spit of land between Ash and French Creek.

A homemaker and rancher, Lizzie had 12 children: Bessie Bridget (Mrs. Frank) Morgan (7 October 1883 in Ft. McKavitt); Addie U (Mrs. Marshall) Young (16 October 1884 in Ft. McKavitt); Charles Thomas (29 November 1886 in Columbia, Az.); Mary J. (Mrs. "Doc") Wills (10 February 1889 in Columbia); Emma Lorien (Mrs. Thomas) Stockdale (12 September 1892); Joseph (28 April 1894); Annie Lee (Mrs. Clyde) Douglas (24 April 1896); George Edward (15 January 1898); Claire Elaine (Mrs. Fred) Cordes (7 February 1900); Henry Lawton (2 December 1902); Samuel Richard (died as an infant); Gertrude March (Mrs. Tommy) Walker (July 1909 in Crown King).

In the 1950s Lizzie was living, as the matriarch of the far-flung Champie clan on the family place, then called "Champie Guest Ranch" in Castle Hot Springs. Lizzie died in Glendale, Arizona in December 1958 and is buried in the Champie Cemetery in Castle Hot Springs.
