Fred Augustus Gallagher was born in Rochester, NY. He was the oldest child of Bertha and James C Gallagher. The story is that he left home by the age of 16 because he and his father didn't get along and he never looked back or returned to visit any of his family again. He soon was enlisted in the service. I haven't been able to find a WWI draft card, so my guess is that he enlisted.

He served in France during WWI, and at one time was reported as missing in action and possibly dead. But that proved to be incorrect. I have very few other details about that time of his life. The National Archive lost many Army records due to a fire in the 1970's and his were included. Family oral history is that he served for a time at Fort Snelling before he left the service.

In 1920 he was living in North Dakota where he married Mary Presba and they had one daughter. They were divorced in 1924 and in 1925 he married Lillian Ervin aka Otilia (Tillie) Sobtzak. They had 3 children. Lillian died in 1937 from TB. In 1964 Fred married Harriet Jackson. He died in 1974 from heart disease.

Most of the information I've been able to gather about Fred (my maternal grandfather) has been from census, birth, death, marriage records and word of mouth.

Military Information: PFC, US ARMY
