SUE (MICHEL) ACKLEY - A Sterling area woman met sudden and violent death shortly before midnight Friday (08 Jan 1965) on Rt. 30, two miles west of the intersection of Rts. 2 and 30 when her car and a semi-truck collided head on. Killed instantly was Mrs. Richard H. (Sue) Ackley, Woodlawn Road, Sterling. The driver of the truck, Jerry Stanton, 30, Montour, Iowa, was not injured. Troopers said Mrs. Ackley was eastbound and Stanton westbound at the time of the collision. Her car ran off the right side of the road and as she attempted to bring it back on the pavement it crossed the centerline and crashed head on into the westbound semi. Mrs. Ackley was thrown from her car, and although there are no conclusive reports, it is believed by state police the semi passed over her body. Following the collision the semi slid off the left side of the highway and into a deep ditch. Damage to the Ackley car was estimated at $1,200 and $9,000 to the semi.
