William Edward Early entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was born in Lynchburg on March 6, 1933, to the late Katherine G. Early and Carrington Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Rice Early; his brothers, Calvin R. Early and Ralph P. Early; and his sister, Patricia K. "Penny" Early.

He was baptized at an early age at Diamond Hill Baptist Church, where he remained a faithful member of the usher board, the men's chorus, Church-At-Our House Ministry and the trustee board. He was the groundskeeper of the church for several years.

William was educated in the public schools of Lynchburg and graduated from Dunbar High School in the class of 1954. He worked as a porter at Wills-Camp Clothing Co. and as a clerk at Peter's Newsstand for several years.

William is survived by two devoted children, Michael E. Early (Jenny) and Wilma Katricia E. Rucker (Lewis); a loving sister, Barbara E. Dillard (Jerry); six grandchildren, Breon, Tiffany, Mike O., Tristan, JaTaen and Jarren; 11 great- grandchildren; a loving aunt, Christine E. Rosser; four loving sisters-in-law, Hattie Daniels, Lil Winfree (Ed), Barbara Taylor and Jean B. Early; a devoted cousin/caregiver, Shawn Simmons; several nieces and nephews; and many dear cousins, neighbors, other relatives and friends.

A sincere appreciation is extended to Dr. William Blackman, Dr. Eric Kenny, Dr. Daniel Carey, Dr. Jacqueline Jacobs, Dr. Peter Caprise and the medical staff at Centra LGH and Skilled Care VBH; Centra Home Health Services and the pharmacy staff at Wal-Mart, Wards Road, for your loving care and concerns for William E. Early.

A homegoing celebration service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2011, at Diamond Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Warren L. Anderson. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery. His remains will lie in state at the church one hour before the service. The family is receiving friends, and the cortege will assemble, at the home of his sister, Barbara Dillard, 420 W.
