Gary C. Humes passed away March 25, 2011, in Pueblo, Colo. Gary was born Feb. 5, 1950, in Salida, Colo. He graduated from Western State College in Gunnison with a B.A. in music education in 1972 and with a M.A. in school administration in 1981. He did post-graduate work at UNC in Greeley. Gary retired in 2004 after working six years as a music/band director and 24 years as a school administrator in Northeastern Colorado and Trinidad. During his 14 years with School District No. 1, Gary was the assistant principal at Trinidad High School and principal at East Street Elementary and Trinidad Middle School. Gary had a passion for music of the big-band era. Upon arriving in Trinidad in 1991, he co-founded the local longtime band "The Trinidaires." Gary played tenor sax and served as the band's manager. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Joy Humes; and a twin brother, Lary. He is survived by a sister, Sharon (Dwight) Lewellen; a niece, Shira Lewellen; a nephew, Mark (Anna) Lewellen, all of Denver; and a cousin, Georga (Don) Davis of Salida. Funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2011, in the First Christian Church, 200 S. Walnut in Trinidad. Private interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Salida, Colo.
