US Congressman and Attorney. He attended private schools and graduated from the law department of Columbia College (University). He was admitted to the bar in 1828 and opened his legal practice in New York City. He entered politics in 1832 after election to the New York State Assembly. Three years later, he was elected to the 24th United States Congress for three years. He served again from March 4, 1841 to March 3, 1843. When he was not re-elected, he was appointed as New York Count District Attorney and served in that position until 1850. Four years later, he served as the United States District Attorney for the southern district of New York until 1858. By 1881, he was again district attorney for New York County until his death.
