Obituary:

Death of a Long Time Public Servant.

Mr. Hugh Blackwell, for many years a public servant of Somerville, died on Saturday morning, just as the clock had struck the hour of twelve. He was born in Ireland, was about 63 years of age, and had lived in this city 35 years. For 17 years he was in the employ of the Fitchburg Railroad, being gate keeper at the Park Street crossing, and left that corporation after faithful service, to accept the position of lamplighter for Somerville, which post he held continuously for 22 years. At one time, with his son, he carried on the whole work. The fact of his long term of service was evidence of his ability and fidelity. Mr. Blackwell was sick only a few days, his disease being pneumonia. He leaves a widow, two sons, Councilman Blackwell being one, and a daughter, fifteen years of age. His funeral took place on Monday morning at St. Joseph's Church, Rev. C. McGrath officiating. The pall bearers were members of the Independent Order of Foresters, of which the deceased was an honored member, and were Messrs. Grady, Jackson, O'Shea and Halleran of Cambridge, and Thomas and William McGrath of this City. The remains were buried at Dorchester.
