Lieutenant General WELLS died at his home on the Alisal Ranch in Solvang. He was the son of Dr. George Samuel Wells a well known eye-nose-throat specialist of Santa Barbara, California. Jim grew up in Santa Barbara and attended Roosevelt Elementary School, La Cumbre Junior and Santa Barbara High School. In 1934 he started college at UC Berkley until attendance was interrupted by Military Service.
Jim received his Pilot`s wings in 1941 and joined the 312th Bombardment Group. He flew 160 combat missions with the Douglas A-20 HAVOC Low Level Attack Bomber.
During the Korean conflict(WAR) Jim flew 17 B-29 missions as Deputy Commander of SAC 22nd Bombardment Wing.
In 1960 stationed in Omaha, SAC Hq. Brig.General Wells became SAC Inspector General.
In July of 1963 Wells was promoted to Major General and assumed Command of the 1st Strategic Aerospace Division at Vandenberg Air force Base.
In 1967, as Commander of 3rd Air Division on Guam, he flew 20 B-52 combat missions over Vietnam. He then became Director of Operations at SAC Hq. Next Jim went to Washington, added a third star and became the Air Force Inspector General.

Wells logged over 12,000 hours of flying time as a command pilot with over 700 hours of combat time and hundreds of missions in three Wars.
