Lexington, Texas. Jan 4th 1874. Dear Aunt Amanda and Aunt Nancy -- I take my seat this morning to drop you a few lines of very ? sadness. About two weeks ago Della had a fine son was doing very well - so every body thought - ? she taken cold on Friday night the 26th of Dec. or rather Saturday morning before day - I went after the Dr just before day and he came and never done her any good. she gradually grew worse all the time and on the third of this month in the morning about three oclock she died. she knew everybody and everything up to within an hour of the time of her death although she was talking out of her head for several days but whenever anyone would call her attention to anything she knew all about it - she was buried last night at Prospect Church about five miles from here - The Dr. that waited on her first moved out of the county in a day or two so there was no chance to get him. we got the only two Drs there was about here - they were very good Drs. so said to be - Drs Doak and Allen. I got a letter from aunt Mandy the night before she died and Vicy read part of it to her but she did not seem to pay any attention to it - she recollected you very well but did not understand the letter. she was so near gone and her mouth was so dry she did not talk but very little after that so that you could understand her. she didn't seem to care much for anyone but Bill. Mat had a chill this morn - all the rest are well. I forgot to say - Aunt Judy and Uncle Thomas has taken the baby. Aunt Judy stayed here all the time Della was sick - both night and day - I don't believe that I can think of anything else to write so I will close - give my love to all, yourselves included - I remain as ever your affectionate nephew.
