"Samuel Hitt Davis was born in Warren County, Ohio Nov. 11, 1826. He was married to Mary F. Woodmansee April 1, 1849. To this union were born six children, three boys and three girls, four of them passed away in infancy.
In 1852 he moved with his family from Darke County, Ohio to Henry Co., Iowa. In 1858 he moved to Lansing, Iowa. In 1875 he moved to Pleasantridge, near McGregor, Iowa, where he resided until 1889, when he became a resident of Dawes County, Neb. In 1897 he moved to Hay Springs, where he resided until his death which occurred March 17, 1909, aged 82 years four months six days.
He enlisted in 1861 in Co. K, Fifth Iowa Infantry, in which he served fifteen months. On account of disability caused by serious illness, he was honorably discharged. After regaining his health, he recruited the Eighth and Ninth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, and became Second Lieutenant in Co. F, 9th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. With this command he served three years and was honorably discharged with First Lieutenant commission. In all he served four years and three months.
There are left to mourn his loss, his wife, their son S.C. Davis of Casper, Wyo., and Mrs. C.R. Simpson of Hay Springs, Neb.; three grandchildren; also a sister, Mrs. Julia Harding of Scottville, Ill., and a host of friends. Both the children and Mrs. N.B. Spurrier, a niece from North Platte, Neb., were present at the funeral held from the M.E. Church Sat. afternoon, conducted by Rev. D.J. Clard, assisted by Pastor W.D. Smith, and the body was laid to rest in the Hay Springs Cemetery. Had he lived fifteen days longer, arrangements were made to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary."
