John enlisted into the US Navy on 25 March 1954 and retired on 7 May 1980. In September 1972 his Navy rate was Utilitiesman 2nd Class (UT2) and serving with the Seabees. During his service John received at least 3 Navy Good Conduct Medals, the first being on 24 Mar 1957. He received his 2nd Navy Good Conduct Medal on 1 Sept 1968 and a third on 1 Sept 1972.

Some of his early assignments were with the U.S. Navy Mobile Construction Battalion One, New York, NY. U.S. Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA. U.S. Receiving Station, Norfolk, VA. U.S. Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Six, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and the United States Naval Training Center Bainbridge, MD.

John served in Korea and Vietnam.
