He was born August 1842 in Belvidere, Boone County, Illinois. He was the son of William S. Conner (1815 - May 10, 1864) and Julia A. Blanchard (1820 - 1900). Allen B. Conner married Adelia M. Hale on July 6, 1865 in Mitchell County, Iowa. He was aged 22, she was 19. (Iowa, County Marriages, 1834-1938). She was the daughter of Oliver Earle Hale (1818 - Oct. 29, 1889) and Rhoda Ann Munson (Sept. 16, 1824 - May 8, 1907). Allen's father William S. Conner and brother Edward Conner served in Company A, 27th Iowa.

Allen B. Connor was a member of Company I, 27th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. On the roster, he was listed as Allen B. "O'Connor". The South Dakota Death Index and the records at the U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteers Soldiers at Battle Mountain Sanitarium, Hot Springs, Falls River, South Dakota lists him as Allen B. O'Connor. He died at the U.S. National Home on Feb. 16, 1921. But he is Allen B. Connor on all of his census records and his marriage record.

He was also listed as Allen B. Connor, a sergeant in Company F, 46th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. The pension records for the 27th Iowa and 46th Iowa are cross referenced, showing that they are the same person.
