Section: Obituaries

Richard W. Rohwer, age 81, died at his Bellingham residence on Wednesday, March 23, 2011.

He was born in Bellingham on April 8, 1929 to Victor A. and Lucille May (Wise-Brown) Rohwer and was a 1947 Meridian High School graduate. Following high school Richard was employed by Georgia Pacific; taking a military leave of absence when he was drafted by the U.S. Army and served in Europe during the Korean War Era from 1953 to 1955.

In 1955 he met Shirley Jones; they married in 1956 and together had four children. Their friendship remained after divorcing.

A simple caring family man who loved the outdoors, Richard delighted in camping with his kids and was an avid walker. In retirement, after 36 years with Georgia Pacific, he loved to take cruises and in the past year took a special interest in local pioneer history--especially in the Ten Mile area where his family settled in the late 1800's.

The family is very grateful to the fourth floor nurses at St. Joseph Hospital for their kind and compassionate care given to Richard.

Preceded in death by his brothers Jack, Glen and Lee.

Graveside services with military honors will be held Monday, March 28, 3:00 pm at Ten Mile Cemetery, on Ten Mile Road, Bellingham. A fellowship gathering will follow at the Albert J. Hamilton Post #7 American Legion Hall, 1688 W. Bakerview Rd., Bellingham.

Memorial donations are suggested to: Whatcom Hospice Foundation, 800 E. Chestnut St., Ste. 1-C, Bellingham, WA 98225.

Arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Lynden.
